Lady Panthers win their first state title in school history
Van Alstyne, Texas - The Van Alstyne Lady Panthers volleyball team made history on Saturday night, defeating the New Deal Lady Lions 3-1 to claim the Class 4A state championship. The victory marks the Lady Panthers' first state title in school history.
The Lady Panthers entered the state tournament as the No. 2 seed, but they quickly proved that they were the team to beat. They won their first two matches in straight sets, and then they defeated the No. 1 seed Canyon Lady Eagles in the semifinals in five sets.
In the championship match, the Lady Panthers fell behind early, losing the first set 25-23. However, they rallied to win the next three sets 25-18, 25-22, and 25-19.
Senior outside hitter Madison Williams led the Lady Panthers with 20 kills, while senior setter Savannah Hemby had 30 assists. Junior middle blocker Ashlyn Svoboda also had a strong performance, with 12 kills and six blocks.
"This is an incredible feeling," said Lady Panthers head coach Mandy McKay. "These girls have worked so hard all season, and they deserve this championship. I'm so proud of them."
The Lady Panthers' victory is a major accomplishment for the Van Alstyne community. It is the first state championship for any Van Alstyne team in any sport.
